The annual summer carnival at St. Theresa’s Church in Pelham Bay, Bronx NY turned into panic when a ride tipped over while children were in it. The ride, called “Dragon Wagon”, is a children’s roller coaster. It was supposed to make a loop at the end of the ride but instead tipped over. Eleven children riding the roller coaster suffered injury and were taken to Jacobi Medical Center; 1400 Pelham Parkway South Bronx, New York 10461; for treatment and evaluation. Reports show that the company had a permit to operate the carnival.

Nassau County Police responded to a call that diners in the Colony Diner on Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, were light headed, nauseous and dizzy. When they arrived on the scene they rushed the diner patrons to Nassau University Medical Center. All six were diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. They were kept over night, but police did not make public the condition they were in or if they had been released. An investigation by Police Emergency Service Unit and the Fire Marshal's Office found a pipe being used to ventilate a hot water heater had been leaking carbon monoxide into the kitchen. Workers at Royal Waste Service, Inc., a sewage plant on Douglas Ave. in Jamaica NY, were trying to unclog an 18 foot deep cesspool. They did not know that the cesspool was leaking poisonous gas into the air. Royal Waste Service, Inc. had hired the workers from S. Dahan Sewer Specialists to unclog their drains. Queens County Police report that 23 year old Harel Dahan fell into the cesspool while he was trying to unclog it. His father, Shlomo Dahan, 49, climbed in after his son to save him. After a few minutes, a coworker Rene Francisco Rivas, 52, climb down the hole to see what had happened to the two. When the three did not emerge, fire fighters were called. Fire fighters had to wear protective suits to retrieve the bodies. Official reports say that the hole was full of poison hydrogen sulfide and the three were quickly overcome by the poisonous gas.

There was a two monorail train crash in Walt Disney World, Florida. The monorails were part of the Epcot line in Magic Kingdom. They smashed into each other when they were pulling into the ticket and transportation center. Reports do not say what the cause of the accident was, but the entire 14.7 mile train line has been shut down for investigation. The trains were carrying a combined total of five passenger and 4 employees, including the two drivers. One driver suffered a fatal injury. The other was taken to the hospital; the extent of his injury has not been made public as of yet. The other passengers and employees did not sustain any serious injury. Walt Disney World claims this is the first fatality on their monorail line since it started running 38 years ago.

A construction worker was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York after he fell off the 20 foot high rise he was working on. New York City Police have not issued a public report of the accident, but have said he was in stable condition. The worker, who is still unidentified, was working at the Barclay St. construction site, which is just north of the World Trade Center site in Manhattan. Witnesses of the accident say that the man never lost consciousness, but was not moving while he was on the stretcher. Investigators on the scene have blamed the strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall as the reason for his fall.

Back on August 1, 2005, NYPD officer Maureen Cerati, was horribly injured by a hit-and-run driver. Just before 3 a.m. Cerati was working on a crash scene on the Belt Parkway, where the DWI, Oscar Berrios, had flipped his car, killing one of his passengers. While working on this incident, ex-con Deirk Keitt drove by, slamming into Cerati, and dragging her over 100 feet along the parkway. She suffered multiple injuries, some very serious.

A precedent was set when the state Appellate Division ruled that Cerati can sue both Berrios and Keitt. The NYPD officer was thrilled with the decision saying, “Officers are often told, ‘It’s all in a day’s work.’ It’s very gratifying to see that if officers are hurt in the life of duty they will be taken care of by the authorities.”

The civil suit against Keitt was settled, but Berrios did not believe that he was responsible because his car never touched the cop. Under the existing law, Cerati’s law suit against Berrios would have been tossed, but this appeals decision means that it won’t likely happen. Cerati’s lawyer, Joseph Decolator says that anyone whose negligent or criminal acts bring a police officer to the scene is equally liable with the person who directly caused the inuries. This landmark court ruling gives cops more leeway over who they can sue for on-the-job injuries.

Brickworkers had been repairing the side of an apartment building when the scaffold they were using suddenly had the support cables snap. Three workers from Nova Restoration, which is also located in Brooklyn, had been on the scaffold at the time of the accident. The workers had a supervisor come and inspect the scaffolds before they climbed onto it. Henry Siebor, a 42 year old Brooklyn resident, had not secured his safety harness before trying to cross from one scaffold to the adjoining scaffold. It was at that time the cable broke and Siebor fell from the fourth story. The other two workers were able to hang onto the cable until firefighters from Ladder 122 arrived and rescued them. The scaffold material was rented from Rockledge Scaffold Corp, located in Yonkers, NY. Police report that the building, located at 438 12th St. in Park Slope NY, has 10 outstanding violations.
