NYC Settles in Case of 2006 Police Shooting

The city is going to pay more than $7 million to settle a civil suit involving a fatal police shooting, a New York Injury Lawyer reports. A Brooklyn federal judge approved the deal, ending a long, racially-charged affair that caused disputes and shocked disbelief all through the city.

The slain man was having a bachelor party at a strip club in Queens when he was shot to death. He was scheduled to be married just hours later on November 25, 2006. He was survived by his children, 7 and 4 years of age. His estate will receive $3.25 million, a New York Injury Lawyer has learned.

A friend of the victim, who was wounded, will receive $3 million. Another friend who was shot will get $900,000. The city’s press release appeared to beg for forgiveness. “The city regrets the loss of life in this tragic case,” it read in part.

The victim’s fiancée told a New York Injury Lawyer that she found the settlement “fair”. She went on to say, “No amount of money will provide closure.”

The $7 million is one of the largest payouts the city has ever been compelled to make. One man received $9.9 million after serving 19 years in prison. He had been framed by a cop for murder. Another man received $8.7 million after being brutalized by cops in a Brooklyn station house in 1997.
